Besides being an American professional wrestler, Ettore Ewen is a former powerlifter. He is signed to WWE, where he performs under the ring name Big E. He has been on hiatus due to a broken neck since March 2022. Apart from his solo profession, he has achieved recognition as a skilled tag team wrestler with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods in The New Day.

The New Day and the Ridge Holland and Sheamus team got into a feud in March 2022. After a match between the teams on SmackDown on March 11, Big E unintentionally fell on the top of his head after Holland gave him an overhead belly-to-belly suplex at ringside.

Big E was put on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. Big E revealed via social media that he had a broken neck, with fractures to his C1 vertebrae and C6 vertebrae, but no ligament or spinal cord injury

As of 2024, it is still unknown if Big E will ever return to active wrestling.

Why doesn’t Big E wrestle anymore?

The former WWE champion has not competed in a match since March 2022 due to a neck injury he sustained during a match on “SmackDown.” Doctors once advised him never to wrestle again, but the choice is now with him.

The New Day member and former WWE Champion gave an update on his recovery from a broken neck he suffered in 2022, and he still isn’t cleared to compete.

He shared on social media, saying, “Two-year neck scans are in.” “Not much has changed. Although my C1 has fibrously healed, no new bone has grown. To be honest, I may never receive medical clearance. I am not cleared. However, I consider myself extremely fortunate to be pain-free, joyful, and well. 

On the “SmackDown” episode from March 11, 2022, Big E sustained the injury. 

Since then, the former defensive lineman for the University of Iowa has participated in several WWE appearances outside of the ring for fundraising and community service. He participated in the coverage of WrestleMania 40.

He has stated repeatedly over the last two years that he is unsure if he will be cleared to wrestle again and that his doctors advise him to never return to the ring.
