Siphiwe Mkhonza died on March 5, 2024. On Tuesday, he lost the battle to a kidney infection and died in the early hours of the day. The entire South African football community is mourning the loss of a precious gem. Siphiwe Mkhonza’s death was confirmed by his father. He died at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

Mkhonza Couldn’t Achieve Everything He Wanted

Andile Ncube, who is popularly known for her radio personality as well as his TV personality, revealed they were doing everything possible to help Mkhonza the morning he died. They did call for help but unfortunately, Mkhonza couldn’t be saved.

He revealed that it wasn’t easy for Mkhonza and the back and forth to the hospital made things tough. Mkhonza gave his full strength to survive but couldn’t. He had many dreams and things to achieve in life.

Ncube talked about Mkhonza’s wish to marry his beloved girlfriend. She was his support system and stayed with him through all the thicks and thins. His plans were shattered after he fell sick and his wedding plans were canceled.

“On one particular day last year in September, he called to ask me to accompany him, but unfortunately, he got ill again, and she was there once again,” he elaborated.

Family and Friends Devastating State

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender’s death was devastating for his family, friends and fans. Mkhonza was just 44 and his loss is painful for the entire football community. He had a versatile style of playing and he was affectionately called Dr. Mnandi by fans and fellow mates.

Joseph Mkhonza was devastated at the loss of his son. He couldn’t express his inner turmoil but could be seen grieving. After fighting a long battle, his son lost it at the age of 44.

The entire family was looking forward to his recovery and expected him to return home soon but fate has its tragedies.

The SABC released an official statement about their beloved analyst’s demise. They expressed grief and mourned over the sudden demise of a talented and enthusiastic person.

The SAFA President was seen giving tribute to a soul who entertained and gave his best to his audience. Dr. Danny Jordaan acknowledged the fact that Mkhonza was amazing and that his charisma remained the same both on and off the pitch.

Memorial and Funeral Service

Siphiwe Mkhonza’s memorial service was held on Friday, March 8, at the SABC Radio Park. renowned personalities like former Bafana legends and Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi Premier and other fellow mates took part in the memorial service and paid their tributes.

Meanwhile, the funeral is going to be held at KwaThema Hall, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday, March 10 for a final goodbye to the legendary figure of the football field who lived short but lived big.
