As the White House prepares for an impeachment battle with Congress, Trey Gowdy has been called upon to join President Donald Trump’s outside counsel.
Gowdy’s position as a Fox contributor and his representation of the president would present a conflict of interest.
White House counsel Pat Cipollone declared in a defiant letter that the Trump administration will not cooperate with the congressional probe, sending a warning shot across the bow to Democrats spearheading the impeachment investigation, as Trump is reportedly bolstering his outside legal team.
The impeachment investigation revolves around Trump’s phone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, during which the American president requested that Ukraine “look into” unproven allegations of corruption against former Vice President Joe Biden, who may challenge Trump in 2020, and his son Hunter.
Zelensky was also tasked by Trump to “do us a favor though” by looking into Ukraine’s involvement in the Russia investigation led by former special counsel Robert Mueller.
Gowdy, 55, had chaired the House Benghazi Committee, which looked into the terrorist attack in Libya that claimed the lives of four Americans, including Christopher Stevens, the country’s ambassador.
He had also served as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. After Democrats won majority control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections, Gowdy decided not to run for reelection.
