Who is Otto Kilcher?

Otto is an accomplished farmer, a self-taught mechanic, and a loving husband and father.

Along with being a popular reality show star, Alaska: The Last Frontier chronicles the struggles and adventures of the Kilcher clan as they make their way on their homestead close to Homer.

Otto Kilcher was born in Homer, Alaska, on April 19, 1952. His parents were Swiss immigrants who had moved to the state in the 1940s.

Yule, his father, was a politician, filmmaker, and homesteader who managed to flee the chaos of World War II. Ruth, his mother, was a writer, poet, and civic activist.

Atz, Mossy, Stellavera, Sunrise, Wurtilla, Fay, and Catkin were Otto’s seven siblings. They all learned how to farm, fish, hunt, and herd cattle while growing up on a 640-acre homestead in the Alaskan wilderness.

What happened to Otto Kilcher?

Otto Kilcher was hospitalized after suffering a serious accident. A cow trampled Otto as he was traveling through a snowstorm in the winter.

In addition to breaking his arm and ribs and shattering his lungs, the cow also fractured his shoulder and caused other minor wounds.

His injuries were so bad when he was found that his wife was not even allowed to see him when he was brought to the hospital.

Otto had to deal with blood clots even after multiple surgeries and operations because of the complications resulting from the accident.

Otto did his best to stay upbeat about his recuperation while he was in the hospital, but returning to normalcy was a difficult and drawn-out process. Otto, happily, is getting better.

He is alive and well, though there are some residual injuries and parts of him that will never be the same.

It is unclear exactly when or if Otto will appear in the show’s upcoming 12th season, let alone if he will return. Charlotte, Otto’s wife of more than 20 years, is a native of Northern California.

In 1978, this adventurous and forward-thinking woman left her home to work as a wildlife biologist in Alaska. Charlotte and Otto got together in an attempt to assist with the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in South Central Alaska. 

Charlotte and Otto started a new journey together after falling in love: starting a family and living on the homestead. She is affectionately referred to as Otto’s “hippy chick from Berkeley.”

She has always loved nature, wildlife, and all animals, and she has always hugged trees.

The American reality cable television program Alaska: The Last Frontier debuted on the Discovery Channel on December 29, 2011.

The Kilcher family, descended from Swiss immigrants and pioneers of Alaska, Yule and Ruth Kilcher, are featured in the show as they live on their homestead 11 miles outside of Homer.

The clan chooses to survive by farming, hunting, and preparing for the long winters by forgoing modern heating. The singer Jewel, whose father is Atz, is related to the Kilcher family and has made appearances on the show. 

On-site production takes place all year long. The production team is headquartered in California.
